The Sustainable Markets Initiative and Bank of America launch the Lighthouse Initiative to invest in Nature and biodiversity, managed by Eurazeo
- The Sustainable Markets Initiative and Bank of America have catalysed the creation of the Lighthouse Initiative, a dedicated investment allocation to develop and scale Nature and biodiversity solutions, managed by Eurazeo within its Future Industries Fund III.
- The Lighthouse Initiative brings to life the vision of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, of accelerating private sector investment in support of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Eurazeo is partnering with the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), the world’s go-to private sector organization for sustainable transition, and Bank of America to establish the Lighthouse Initiative, aimed at catalysing private capital into Nature and biodiversity opportunities globally. The investment aims to channel private capital towards new business models in Nature and biodiversity that remain underfunded today. Bank of America and Eurazeo are cornerstone investors in the Lighthouse Initiative, which launched on September 23, 2026 with $40 million in aggregate capital commitments. This initiative is structured to welcome further investment by bringing together additional partners, thereby expanding the scale and ambition of the initiative.
The initiative will make minority investments in project development platforms and selected technology-enabled solutions across developed and emerging markets. The initiative aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, with each investment expected to contribute to at least one of its targets, such as Target 3 (“30x30”), a measure to conserve and manage at least 30% of the world's terrestrial, inland water, coastal, and marine areas by 2030, and with the SMI’s Terra Carta, a mandate that puts sustainability at the heart of the private sector launched by the former Prince of Wales in 2021.
The strategic investment priorities include:
- Ecosystem Protection and Nature Regeneration – investing in companies that demonstrate the business case for protecting intact ecosystems and restoring Nature at scale, such as developers of regenerative agriculture and forestry, that rebuild soil health and biodiversity.
- Nature-positive Transition of Industries & Global Supply Chains – supporting the shift of industries and supply chains towards Nature-positive models, with a focus on sustainable alternatives to conventional materials and inputs (e.g. bio-based materials, biological agricultural inputs), circular processes and solutions that reduce pollution and resource extraction.
- Nature Finance Ecosystem Development – enabling the development of the financing ecosystem around Nature, notably through project development platforms structured on infrastructure-like models that can attract co-investment from institutional investors, development finance institutions and public partners.
- Transparency, Standardisation & Comparability of Impact – backing solutions that improve the measurement, monitoring, reporting and verification of Nature outcomes, such as eDNA-based biodiversity monitoring, digital MRV platforms and supply-chain traceability tools.
The Lighthouse Initiative will be managed by Eurazeo’s Future Industries team, which invests globally across sustainable industries, including Nature and biodiversity. Investments will be monitored through Eurazeo’s impact framework, enhanced with dedicated biodiversity indicators, such as a biodiversity footprint assessment.
Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, President and Global Envoy, the Sustainable Markets Initiative, said:
“The Lighthouse Initiative’s launch represents the global economic leadership and impact of the Sustainable Markets Initiative. Nature is a fundamental pillar of our mandate and is the true engine of our economy. The Lighthouse Initiative will mobilise much needed private capital into Nature and Nature-based solutions. It represents our unique ability to harness the power of the private sector to deliver results for Nature, people and planet.”
Brian Moynihan, Chair and CEO of Bank of America and Chair of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, said:
“Companies and investors are seeking opportunities to invest in Nature and biodiversity. Eurazeo has a demonstrated track record supporting hundreds of companies and the Lighthouse Initiative can help create even more opportunity.”
Matthieu Bonamy, Partner Future Industries at Eurazeo, added:
“We are honoured that the Sustainable Markets Initiative and Bank of America have entrusted us with the management of this project. Nature is the foundation of the industries we invest in, yet biodiversity remains one of the most underfunded investment themes. With this initiative, we want to demonstrate that protecting and restoring Nature makes commercial sense, at scale. At Eurazeo, and within the Future Industries team, sustainability and impact are at the core of our business strategy model and we look forward to working to bring more investors behind the entrepreneurs building Nature-positive businesses.”
